I’ve discussed, probably to the point of boredom, the things that bother me about lady mags, celeb rags and even health & fitness glossies but there is one thing that never fails to delight me: the recipe section. Every magazine has them – even People publishes a weekly celeb favorite recipe (often ironically right after an article circling everyone’s cellulite in red, sigh) – but the ones that make me most excited are the “healthified” recipes.
As you all know I have ruined many a good meal by trying to healthify food myself but when under the tutelage of a health mag and whatever famous chef they employ, I do get much better results. Take for instance this recipe from Health magazine for Mariska Hargitay’s guilt-free chocolate chip muffins. They are delightful and not an ounce of white flour to be found in them! Although, I must confess: I sub regular chocolate chips for the “dairy and gluten free” variety she recommends. I also use regular old brown sugar instead of turbinado. I’m cheap like that.
Sitting proudly next to my recipe books (all one of them – I love you Betty Crocker!) is a binder stuffed full of torn-out pages of magazine recipes and printouts from recipe sites. In addition to my SVU muffins above, I’ve also struck recipe gold with:
– Low Fat Oatmeal Cottage Cheese Protein Pancakes (Gym Buddy Allison first alerted me to these wonders and my kids ask for these at least once a week, although be warned that they turn out more akin to crepes than pancakes.)
– Diet Girl’s Instant Frozen Yogurt (I got this by way of Deb a.k.a. Smoothie Girl and it has become my new favorite summer treat. I actually omit the sugar and just blend together my homemade yogurt and frozen berries. I’m all about easy!)
– Heather Eats Almond Butter’s Maple Oaties (Again, a perennial kid fave. I’ve gotten a ton of great recipes off her site!)
And, for kicks and giggles, I’m dying to try these Peanut Roasted Chickpeas. Thanks to the delightful Sagan, now I have the peanut butter powder to do so! Whee!
What’s your favorite go-to place for recipes? Let me know in the comments and I’ll keep updating this page to keep you posted!

Ironically, I love blogs. I also hit up my library's cookbook and magazine sections!
YOU! So keep em comin!!
I like WW. My favorite receipe is the pumpkin chocolate chip cookies. You get a box of spice cake mix, add a large can or pumpkin and some dark chocolate chips and thats it!
I also love your post workout muffins. You should post that recipe! PS I loved seeing you the other night. You are so cute pregnant and with long hair…
I have been using my cookbooks less and less due to websites like epicurious.com and such. I love being able to read other peoples comments, they are usually so helpful in suggesting alterations or fixes that make it better.
I get cooking light magazine and have bought some of their cookbooks. But they can be hit or miss with my family's food preferences.
Thanks so much for the recipes, I am definitely trying the muffins!
I love blogs for healthy recipe ideas. I also really like Cooking Light and I can find some great recipes on myrecipes.com and allrecipes.com
I really like the Clean Eating magazine, and I also like allrecipes.com – you can see the nutritional info, and a lot of people post healthy recipes.
Oh, I also use the cook's thesaurus website, because it tells me what substitutions will do to my baking. I find with cooking, it's pretty easy to opt in/out ingredients without ruining things, but for baking, it's a lot trickier.
Though I admit, I've gone back to bad-for-you baking, since when I know it's healthy I eat like 10 times more of it than I should. Also because the altitude of where I go to school is high enough to mess with the recipes enough, and I feel like I'm pushing it to make something healthy AND adjust for altitude.
At the moment I am loving Good Housekeeping's Supermarket Diet Cookbook. Not only are all the meals healthy. The pictures are super pretty- a big plus in my book. (SO PUNNY! I know!)
ready for this?
I MAKE STUFF UP 🙂
yeah sometimes I use google and do searches but mainly I just play around and see what happens.
hence the fact Im NOT KNOWN as a fab cook even though I always love my cook'coctions.
I love http://www.101cookbooks.com/.
I hit up blogs, but some of my favorite healthier recipies come from a WW cookbook believe it or not (and, no, I've never really done weight watchers). Especially the hot italian chicken sausage with yellow, orange and red peppers and onions. Yummy. So good!
We get Cooking Light, but so often they still have a lot of butter, white flour, and sugar in their recipes.
It's great to see all these new suggestions. Now I just have to get off my butt and cook something!
My favorite source of healthy recipes is the CrossFit Journal Zone Diet Quick Start Guide that breaks things down and has some easy Zone recipes laid out for you.
I use the cookbook "more with less" which is put out by the … Mennonites, I believe.
I love Healthy Cooking magazine. I get tons of recipes from there!
http://www.tasteofhome.com/Healthy-Cooking-Magazine
I have found the most amazing and successful recipes at Karina's Kitchen (www.glutenfreegoddess.blogspot.com) They are all gluten free and vegan and they actually TASTE GOOD! I also post many of my recipe successes on my blog at http://www.foodgirlsfitlife.blogspot.com.
I'm not big on trying new recipes, as it's easier for me to whip up something I know is quick, easy, and okay with the tot. But most of my favorites have come from Weight Watchers. My personal fave is Taco Chili (made with turkey). I often make it and use it for days in every meal, including in my eggs and on my salads 🙂
i love to use sites like cookinglight.com to find healthy recipes, but i also read tons and tons of blogs!
I tend to pull new healthy receipes from the numerous healthy living blogs that I read. I also use my MIL old WW cookbook for tried and true healthy meals.
My favorite recipes and blogs
Easiest breakfast to go, Egg Cupcakes, they are endless variations
http://www.norcalsc.com/index.php/post/egg_cupcakes_to_go/
http://www.sonofgrok.com/2009/03/recipe-and-a-binge-gorilla-cake/
This is an amazing dessert! Also, I love how simple most of his recipes are.
http://www.marksdailyapple.com/category/recipes/?submit=view
These can sometimes get too complicated/specialized but I can find easy ones too!
I love that with a lot of "primal" recipes the ingredients and preparation are so simple that I can make substitutions, and as another poster said "just make stuff up" without screwing up everything.
I have two sources.
"The South Beach Diet Quick & Easy Cookbook"
and
"15-Minute Low-Carb Recipes"
Although I'm not -technically- on a low-carb diet, I find the food inside those books to be delicious, healthy, and (most importantly) easy and quick enough that I'll actually make them, and feel comfortable picking a random new one every week to try. I don't think I've had a single failed meal out of those books, come to think of it.
I have to second allrecipes.com. I go there everyday to see their daily recipes! This is my new favorite:
http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/Chickpeas-in-Tomato-Sauce-With-Feta-and-Wine/Detail.aspx
I LOVE chickpeas and feta. The combo is unreal. And wine makes everything better.
I get ideas from various blogs on a regular basis. However, when I'm looking for something specific, I ask the interweb. I think my favorite site is allrecipes.com as it allows for individuals to review a given recipe and make recommendations based on their own experiences. Using the reviews, I've never been disappointed in a recipe!
I love blogs and the Food Network cook book based on the show "Healthy Appetite." The meals are gorgeous but simple.
And I post tons of recipes on my blog too, all in the "Shed Kitchen." Shameless plug: http://sheditandgetit.wordpress.com/
My go-to source for healthy recipes lately has been Roni's site – http://www.greenlitebites.com.
That said, my husband does most of the cooking and he won't let me keep white pasta in the house. I love looking up and finding new recipes, but the husband doesn't use recipes at all, so I have a large collection of un-tried recipes. hahaha… still working on resolving that issue (we've only been married for 3 months, so it's ok!) hahahaha :o)
Cheap healthy good- http://cheaphealthygood.blogspot.com/ – frequently has healthy, normal recipes. Things you can make without a lot of fake ingredients, and often with ingredients that should be staples (which is not to say that I have a normal complement of kitchen staples). My favorite thing I got from them is kale chips, but another good point in their favor is they list the price per serving of the food- mind, again, the price per serving is not what it would cost me to make it, since it implies I am a good enough housekeeper to find a way to use all of whatever quantity of stuff is required, or that I have basic ingredients on hand, like a grown-up.
Longtime lurker here…. I mainly use AllRecipes.com and the blog Smitten Kitchen. Smitten Kitchen isn't necessarily "health recipes" but it's great!
Haven't seen EatingWell. com listed yet… my new fav. Just made Fragrant Chickpea Stew and Soba Noodles with Eggplant. The eggplant was roasted and chopped in the dish, really disintegrates and adds all the fiber and vit A. Was a kid fav.
My favourite source for recipes lately is Vegetarian Times magazine. I'm not veggie, but the food in there is delicious…it gives me a lot of new ways to cook things and tells me how to cook things I have no idea what to do with.
That and the Joy of Cooking – it has not feiled me yet. Add to that all the great recipes I have from the bakery & coffee shops I worked in in university and I'm a happy camper 🙂
My favorite sources for recipes would be "Everyday Food", both the magazine and the PBS show and "America's Test Kitchen" on PBS. They offer lots of great ideas/inspiration.
I also really like the cookbooks "How to Cook Everything" and "How to Cook Everything Vegetarian" by Mark Bittman. I used the ones I checked out from the library so much that I asked for them for Christmas. I use them all the time. Lots of variety, lots of great instruction for those of us who need it and lots of ideas for veggies.

I'll stop now – Can you tell I love to cook and surf the net a bit too often?
Actually, it's the "Chez J Cookbook!" Hopefully one day. I'll get it in print 🙂
I make those pancakes as well! If you want more of a pancake consistency (not as flat) I add 1/2 a scoop of protein powder and a banana to the batter. Thickens them right up! Here's that recipe:
http://healthyhotthousewife.blogspot.com/2009/07/lets-have-quickie.html
Also I love this turkey meatloaf recipe. The hubbie even devours them and he hates my "healthified" foods usually.
http://healthyhotthousewife.blogspot.com/2009/07/hangin-around.html
Shameless plug complete 🙂
I use foodnetwork.com's search box in order to find recipes that will use up whatever I have in my produce bin/pantry, then I just modify them to be healthier. Cut back on oil/butter, grill meats on my Foreman instead of pan frying them, sub in low fat versions of stuff, etc. I post a lot of the recipes and modifications on my blog at http://absolutlyfit.blogspot.com.
I usually go for Allrecipes, too. They have a healthy eating section and everything.
I like Taste of Home's Healthy Cooking magazine also, formerly known as "Light and Tasty."
I am a bit of a recipe whore with bookshelves (both real and virtual) piled high with cookbooks and cooking magazines. This could turn out to be my favorite post EVER, Charlotte!
I love the blog Cheap Healthy Good.
Hungry-girl.com has some pretty handy, quick things!
I have a ton of cookbooks, including several WW cookbooks (even if I'm not doing the WW diet). I also read a ton of blogs and I get ideas for each of them. Or I just improvise with whatever I have in the fridge; it's always a fun challenge.
I want to start my own food blog one day. My boyfriend convinced me that wordpress is the only way to go, but he's suppose to set a few things up for me (since he will be hosting the blog on his server) and he never came around to doing it yet. If that doesn't change soon I'll probably use blogger for a while.
Blogs and pretty much every health magazine's recipes online. I also like to try Ellie Krieger's recipes on http://www.foodnetwork.com/ellie-krieger/index.html
I follow a primal/paleo type diet so my idea of healthy might not be the same as that of other people (I'm not big on low-fat modifications…) but some of my favorite sources for recipes are:
Elana's Pantry (www.elanaspantry.com) – gorgeous photography + grain free recipes = food porn
http://www.comfybelly.com
http://www.epicurious.com
http://www.davidleibovitz.com okay, maybe not so healthy, but he has the BEST ice cream recipes. just made a batch of vietnamese coffee ice cream yesterday and I can't wait to get home from work and have a scoop!
I use allrecipes a bunch, too, along with whatever comes up when I do a search for a specific dish.
For cookbooks, my favorites are from the host of Splendid Table on NPR. Both the cookbooks and website are full of great recipes. I have been cooking my way through How to Eat Supper, and have loved all of it. (The kids have only loved about 1/2)
And, you should totally get a nifty apron. If you don't have a stack from your grandmother, check out the newly made "vintage" at Etsy.com There are a lot of lovely ones.
I get recipes from blogs, from Cooking Light magazine and I try to make up my own. My success and failures can be found on http://www.dancingaroundthekitchen.wordpress.com but be warned I sometime cook the unhealthy versions too! 🙂
I'm a fan of both Cooking Light and Eating Well magazines. But, I will admit that the Betty Crocker Cookbook is my favorite.
Most everything starts with inspiration I find on the internet, and then come up with a plan in my head subbing/adding things I like for things I don't. Also, my friend's mom is a chef and I like to butcher her fatty/sugary recipes and add veggies and healthify it up.
I love http://www.imadedinner.net/ and http://www.myrecipes.com/ and http://www.sparkrecipes.com/, at least as starting points.
I get a lot of my recipe ideas from food blogs like KathEats (my fave). But if there's a dish I wanna make, I usually just google it and click on whatever link is first/looks yummy. I know, it's a very complex, delicate process. 🙂
Christin
My sister-in-law always has the greatest recipes that are healthy and my children love them.
I usually use FoodTV.com and modify the recipes. Some of them more heavily than the others. I tend to experiment with the recipes a lot, especially since I do all the cooking in the house. Plus, I've found some interesting ways to cut corners so things like my homemade mac & cheese isn't quite so bad for you. Pretty easy, actually. All it really requires is some water, dry mustard, and garlic.
Oooh, I LOVE FOOD PORN ala food gawker & tastespotting! Ugh, sooo good!
I am so short of time today… heading out of town as you will see on my blog post tomorrow BUT I like Clean Eating or Oxygen Women's Mag website. I also have picked up a couple from the Dr. Weil site. Banana bread coming for this Friday post & my homemade protein bars from Clean eating will be posted AGAIN on 9/3/09. I have posts lined up due to my out of town status!
I will have to get back to this post & check out those recipes!!!
I am a terrible cook so I need recipes with FEW ingredients & EASY!!! 🙂
Cookling Light and myrecipes.com. And like you, I'm a magazine recipe junkie. Except mine are in a cute folder instead of a binder.
I do love allrecipes.com as a source for recipes in general, but don't know that I have a source specifically for healthy recipes.
I do have a favorite recipe that I got years ago from Fitness magazine (I've had a subscription since…forever it seems like). I used to be able to look it up on their site, but last time I looked for it I couldn't find it. Fortunately I do have it written out. The recipe is called Soba Noodles with Spicy Peanut Sauce and it's one of my favorite things to make for dinner when I'm on my own – though recently Husband has decided he likes it too which was very exciting to me. 🙂
i love that magazine… i 've been reading it a lot in the fertility dr.'s office lately.
my fav source for good recipes is Smitten Kitchen. she has awesome pics and the recipes are to D-I-E for!
http://smittenkitchen.com/
http://WWW.sandiegocooks.blogspot.com- the best recipe blog ever! (By the way, your blog is awesome, Charlie)
Honestly, I either google it or throw stuff together and hope it turns out right. I know, I'm not much help in that arena.
Well being vegetarian I always turn to the staple books I have on hand "follow your heart cookbook", "real food daily cookbook" and "native foods". I also turn to youtube for cooking with manjula for Indian recipes, not always healthy but I can exchange things, which is pretty much what I do anyway to make things healthier.
Speaking of mags, which do you find are good for fitness related stuff?
I use blogs all the time!!!they are so great!and as others I invent a lot!
Sol from Argentina
Susan has a huuuge database of delicious recipes here:
http://blog.fatfreevegan.com/
I've cooked many of the vegan recipes there for non-vegans to great success!
http://www.vegweb.com has lots of good stuff!
I pretty much just go through my favorite food blogs to find a recipe I am in the mood for. I actually have a bunch of online recipes from these blogs bookmarked according to category (soups, sides, pasta, fish, etc) on my laptop. it makes it so much easier to find what i am looking for!
Pampered Chef has a cookbook called, "It's Good For You: Healthy Recipes for Busy Families" that has a ton of tasty recipes. We really enjoy the black bean burgers and the quick curried chicken.
Oaties – so glad your boys love them. Mine does too. 🙂
I love Clean Eating Magazine, and my favorite blogs for recipes are http://www.choosingraw.com, http://www.katheats.com, & http://www.chocolatecoveredkatie.com.
I love the site for Meals Matter. the link is http://www.mealsmatter.org/
Not only is it healthy, but they also have a meal planner on there that helps you plan meals for the entire week.
Wow, I am anxious to check out all the great links that you have posted. Thank You!!
I seriously would not be able to narrow down my fave healthy food/recipe sources to even two or three. I confess I am a "blog-aholic" and get so many great ideas for simple healthy meals from all the blog posts. They are more fun to read than cookbooks!!
I've always loved looking in Cooking Light magazine. There can be some duds in there, but most of the things I've tried were really good!
I often try to just sub healthy stuff for bad stuff in a recipe. It can work really well with regular cooking, but hardly ever works with baking.
A while back I used to get Cooking Light magazine and really loved the recipes in there. Now though, I tend to make things up as I go rather than following recipes.
My favorite–and not because I'm blogging over there–is http://www.culinarycompetitor.com. I haven't made a thing there that isn't fantastic.
I've gotten some good tips from http://www.hungry-girl.com
I've gotten even better tips from you! Thanks!
I rely on all the wonderful blogs that I subscribe to.
e.estt[at]yahoo[dot]com
I'm enjoying the recipes on the No Meat Athlete blog (http://www.nomeatathlete.com/).
Like a lot of others here, I like the stuff I get from blogs. I also like allrecipes.com. I read through the reviews for ideas on how to make the recipes healthier and my favorite print source for healthy recipes in Clean Eating magazine.
Hey Charlotte! I'm honored to be on your list 🙂 I actually call that concoction Heroin Ice Cream (HIC) and I usually use Greek yog, Carnation malt and stevia…mmmmmmmmmm!
PS. I did that post on overtraining we were talking about…called "Overtraining? Moi?" hee hee, bet you can relate.
Your article posted in here has really blown me away. Highly recommended reading, keep it up !
